Director of Development
The Director of Development is a professional level staff member who works to secure financial resources through best practices of philanthropic fund development and through innovation related to the creation and implementation of a comprehensive/capital campaign. She/he will also conceive and lead strategic efforts to increase support for the Exploreum for operations and special projects with a special, immediate task of launching a comprehensive campaign to raise a minimum of $5 million for capital and special projects. He/she brings an entrepreneurial and outgoing approach, strong experience in building relationships, knowledge and commitment to donor stewardship, and experience in leading and inspiring volunteers, board members, sponsors, and donors. The Director of Development brings a desire to advance the Exploreum’s mission on all levels, working collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and the Board of Trustees. This person reports to and works in tandem with the Executive Director. She/he also serves as the staff liaison with the Junior Advisory Board and assists the Executive Director in leading the Development Committee and all fund development efforts. In addition to the Comprehensive Campaign, responsibilities include sponsorships, annual fund, major gifts, and donor stewardship.
Bachelor’s Degree; at least five – eight years of fund development experience and a track recording of asking and receiving; knowledge of best practices in philanthropy; and, professional nonprofit experience preferably with a science center, museum, science or educational organization, university, or similar entities. Experience in all areas of the development process including strategy, prospecting, relationship building, planning, asking, and stewardship. This is a one person office working with the Executive Director and Board and with part-time assistants. Candidates should be ready to embrace a comprehensive campaign for the 20th anniversary. Experience in major gifts a priority. Knowledge of the Mobile regional donor community is a plus. Computer skills and experience with donor software is needed. The position responsibilities, conducted in a fast-paced educational and fun environment, include the functions of facility rentals, business relations, a membership program, group tours, and event planning at the Gulf Coast’s only science center and IMAX Dome Theater. This position relates directly to the Exploreum’s goals for earned revenue, community engagement, and membership growth and retention. This position intersects internally with all staff and departments and externally with the convention and tourism industry, businesses and corporations, families and individuals, groups of all types, and the Exploreum’s development efforts.
Qualifications include: college degree, at least three – five years of sales experience and event planning, excellent written and verbal skills, strong organizational skills, self-motivation, computer skills, marketing and public relations experience, a can-do attitude, and a gregarious personality.
