Bearded Dragon Feeding

View Video
From June 16th thru September 23rd 2007 the Exploreum is experiencing a reptile invasion. One of our newest visitors is a Bearded Dragon, yet to named, who lives in the Ciba Lab and visits with guest in the reptile exhibit. We have taken the opportunity to film this amazing animal as he excitedly feeds on a large batch of crickets. What fun it is to watch reptiles eat.
Hurricane Katrina
During the 2005 hurricane season the gulf coast experienced one of the worst storms in over 90 years. New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast suffered a great deal of damage. Here in Mobile Alabama we were much more fortunate, however we did have our share of problems. The storm surge flooded much of the downtown area. This video lets you see what happened from the Exploreum’s perspective.
Scorpion Science
Scorpions are fascinating arachnids. We have spent over 3 months handling and caring for 2 Black Emperor Scorpions. This video shows one of them feeding on a Madagascar Hissing Cockroach. We have also managed to capture our scorpion as it appears under ultraviolet light. We hope you enjoy this gross yet fascinating footage.
Exploding Pumpkin
On the Saturday after Thanksgiving 2006 we decided to do a little playing with our food. We called it Left Over Science. For our finale we blew up a pumpkin and we got it on video
Candy Flamethrower
When chemicals react a number of things can happen:  two liquids can form a solid, a gas can be produced, things can change color, OR materials can combust. This video shows what happens when we place an organic substance (a material with a "carbon backbone" like sugar, or wood) into a particular hot and liquefied "oxidizer". The results are extremely exothermic, over 1,500 degrees F exothermic.
Levitating Top Demonstration
Gyroscopic motion, like that of a spinning top, creates a force that can be used to stabilize an object. Magnets can be used to either attract other magnets or repel them. When the forces of gyroscopic motion, magnetic repulsion, and gravity are all balanced correctly object can be made to levitate.
The amazing process of levitation is displayed excellently using a Levitron top. There are no camera tricks, mirrors or wires used to make our top "float". As hundreds of our visitors can tell you this is just an amazing sight to see.
Venus Flytrap Feedings
Venus flytraps are carnivores. They eat meat. These plants contain 3 trigger hairs on the roof of the trap (mouth) and 3 hairs on the bottom. When an insect or anything triggers those hairs the plant snaps shut trapping its prey. Check out the video to see this amazing natural mechanism in action.

Kids Day in Bienville Square

We had the opportunity to visit with some great local kids, during Kids Day in Bienville Square. We met aspiring weather girls, future electronics engineers and soon to be robot builders. Everyone had fun while they learned. We also flung plush germs across the park. Now that's some cool science.

2009 Summer Camps

We have some awesome summer camps here at the Exploreum. This short video shows just snippets of the activities during only 1/2 a day of camp. In our camps we have future robotics engineers, doctors, chemists, physicists and an array of creative scientists. Check out what these amazing kids are doing.

"In an Instant" Frogs Feeding

While showing the Frogs exhibit we decided to use our high speed video camera to capture frogs feeding. These videos were shot at 600 frames per second. It is amazing to watch their movements. Also watch the tongues and the eyes.

"In an Instant" Vase Shattering

We recently purchased a high speed video camera. It is part of our Institute of Museum and Library Science (IMLS) grant. The goal We recently purchased a high speed video camera. It is part of our Institute of Museum and Library Science (IMLS) grant. The goal is to excite an interest in science by showing the dynamics involved in collisions, acceleration, high speed reactions and motion. This is the first complete video we filmed. It was shot at 600 frames per second. VISIT OUR BLOG at http://exploreum.blogspot.com/ AND SUGGEST SOMETING FOR US TO FILM AT HIGH SPEED. IF WE LIKE YOUR IDEA, IT MAY JUST END UP ON YOUTUBE AND THE EXPLOREUM WEBSITE.

WKRG 5 News

In this 4 minute news segment we race the heart, have the news anchor hold a real heart and inflate some pig lungs. We also spend a short time playing with a robotic hand. If we can do all of this in 4 minutes, imagine what a day around here must be like.
