Special Exhibition Gallery
NOW OPEN! The second floor Minds On Hall space (including the ChemLab and Digital Theater) have been renovated and transformed into our new, 6,400 square foot special exhibition gallery!
Saturday, January 28 marks the long awaited return of large-scale traveling exhibits to the Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center. "Our new Special Exhibition Gallery is a significant addition to our permanent galleries in that it will allow us to provide a much broader array of traveling exhibits, rich in science content, to Mobile and the Gulf Coast," says Kirsten Conley, Director of Marketing and Public Relations. The grand opening of the newly designed 6,400 square foot Special Exhibition Gallery coincides with the opening of the Exploreum's new traveling exhibit, Megalodon: Largest Shark that Ever Lived. This 5,000 square foot traveling exhibit, presented by ExxonMobil and produced by the Florida Museum of Natural History with support from the National Science Foundation, features shark replicas, fossils, and ancient ocean artifacts. The centerpiece of the exhibit is a full scale, 60-foot-long, walk-through sculpture of Megalodon, the dominant marine predator that ruled the Earth's oceans for 15 million years. "The Exploreum is known for its traveling exhibits, and our new Special Exhibition Gallery further enables us to fulfill our mission of promoting science literacy in the region and gives us the ability to present large-scale exhibits like Megalodon, which speak to all ages and deliver a strong science message," said Executive Director Gretchen Jaspering.
Additional information about the Renovations:
The newly designed ChemLab will be relocated to the first floor and will be expanded and improved to house a new, updated, chemistry laboratory space.
In the place of the Herrin-Chandler Digital Theater will be a new and improved, high tech, flexible learning space, which will also house ExploreTEC. These two spaces are slated to reopen in the spring.
