Science Center offering special admission rates, activities for mothers and children

For all the kids not sure about what to get their mom for Mother’s Day, don’t fret! The Exploreum has got you covered. During Mother’s Day weekend, on May 8-9, all mothers will gain free admission to the Exploreum with the purchase of a child or youth admission. This special deal includes admission to all of the Exploreum’s permanent exhibits as well as the opportunity to enjoy special programs. The following interactive activities will be offered so children can create gifts for mom:

The Science of Perfume
Children will learn about the mysterious scents that make their mothers smell so good! This activity will cover the history and origins of perfume as well as the science behind different fragrances on the Fragrance Wheel. Children will then have the opportunity to combine primary and secondary scents to fashion their own designer perfume for their mother to take home and show off to her friends! All perfume supplies are being donated by Virginia's Health Foods.

The Science of Colored Flowers
Ever wonder where florists find all those crazy carnations? This activity will teach children how to make their own colored creations for their moms by using food coloring and science.

“The Exploreum is excited to give families the opportunity to spend the day together celebrating the mothers in their lives,” said Caroline Etherton, assistant director.

The Exploreum’s current operating hours are Mon. – Fri. from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sat. from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sun. from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Family memberships are available for only $100 and include unlimited visits to the Exploreum, discounts on IMAX films, Gift Shop purchases, camps, birthday parties and more.
